What is glaucoma?

It is a condition that damages your optic nerve. It usually gets worse over time. It occurs when pressure is built up inside the eye. It generally runs in the family. When the pressure in the eye increases, called intraocular pressure, it can damage the optic nerve. If the damage persists or gets worsens, glaucoma can also cause permanent vision loss.

What are the major causes of Glaucoma?

The fluid that is present inside your eye called aqueous humor, flows out of the eye from a mesh-like channel. The liquid builds up when the channel either gets blocked or the eye is producing too much liquid.

Fewer common causes of glaucoma are blunt or chemical injury caused to your eye causing severe eye infection or blocked blood vessels inside your eyes, or any inflammatory conditions.

What are the symptoms of Glaucoma?

  • Vision loss
  • Redness in the eye
  • Upset stomach or vomit
  • Eyes that look hazy
  • Pain in the eye

What are the types of Glaucoma?

Open-angle Glaucoma

This is the most common type. It is also called wide-angle glaucoma by doctors. The drain structure is considered to be your eye.

Angle-closure glaucoma

This type of glaucoma is most commonly found in Asia. It is also called acute or chronic angle-closure or narrow-angle glaucoma. Your eye doesn’t drain the way it should because the drain space between the iris and the cornea becomes too narrow. This might build up pressure in the eye and can also be linked with farsightedness and cataracts.

What is the treatment for Glaucoma?

There can be various types of treatments given to the patients with Glaucoma like eye drops, oral medications, laser surgery, or microsurgery.

Eye Drops

This might help in lowering the creation of fluid formation in the eye. The side effects may include allergies, redness, blurriness, or irritated eyes.

Oral Medication

Your doctor might also suggest some type of medications to be taken by mouth. This drug can be useful in draining away the fluid faster.

Laser surgery

This can help raise the flow of fluid from the eye in case of open-angle glaucoma. The procedures can include:

  • Trabeculoplasty
  • Iridotomy
  • Cyclophotocoagulation
